Verse 7Or perhaps he does not know

इयं विसृष्टिर्यत आबभूव यदि वा दधे यदि वा न ।

यो अस्याध्यक्षः परमे व्योमन्त्सो अङ्ग वेद यदि वा न वेद ॥

iyaṃ visṛṣṭir yata ābabhūva yadi vā dadhe yadi vā na |

yo asyādhyakṣaḥ parame vyoman so aṅga veda yadi vā na veda ||

Meaning

From where this creation has arisen, whether it was made or whether it was not, the one who looks down upon it from the highest heaven, he surely knows. Or perhaps he does not know.

Word by word

Words joined in recitation are shown split. Where sounds change at the joins, the dictionary form is given under the word.

Reflection

Did someone set this world in place, or did no one? Is there any order that holds it together? The overseer in the highest heaven surely knows. And then the last words: yadi vā na veda. Or perhaps he does not know. There is no anger in this, and no despair. It is simple honesty, reached by thinking as far as thought can go. And it is not a closed door, but an invitation to keep looking.
